Transportation of dangerous goods (ADR)

Separately, we single out the transportation of dangerous goods (ADR), due to the special specificity and increased care in the implementation of the transportation of such goods. There are many nuances here: a special license for transport, appropriate equipment, limited transportation conditions. However, all these issues are solved for our transport – forwarding company, since the transportation of dangerous goods is one of our main services and we have been successfully implementing it for a long time. To order this type of transportation, send an application ON-LINE.

Peculiarities of transporting dangerous goods.

Transportation of dangerous goods differs from other types of cargo transportation by special requirements for the preparation and organization of transportation, as well as increased security measures enshrined in international law. If you order international transportation of combustible, flammable, explosive, radioactive and other hazardous substances, we recommend that you pay attention to the following details of the transportation of such types of cargo:

· Responsibility for the transportation of dangerous goods is borne directly by the executors: the carrier and the forwarding company, which must have a special permit for organizing the transportation of dangerous goods, depending on their classification;

· Features of transportation, type of cargo packaging depend on the class and degree of its hazard (there are 9 hazard classes of ADR cargo with subtypes) – special security measures are applied to each type of dangerous cargo; other factors influencing the preparation and carrying out of the transportation of dangerous goods include: the weight and dimensions of the cargo, the route of transportation, season, road restrictions, sometimes notification and coordination of the route with the police (if necessary, escorting the carrier), etc.;

· The vehicle must be carefully inspected before each shipment of dangerous goods and must be approved for such transportation, as well as be equipped with the means to eliminate possible incidents; the driver must have a certificate of training for the transport of dangerous goods and be instructed in all cases of an accident; while the condition of the cargo (integrity and serviceability of the container (packaging), the presence of markings and seals) is checked by the consignor before the start of transportation;

· Pay attention to the peculiarities of transport and accompanying documentation for dangerous goods: emergency card and consignment notes must be filled out in accordance with international requirements, and, as a rule, are provided by the shipper;

· It is important to remember that the carrier is responsible for the fulfillment of his immediate duties and the preparation of vehicles for the carriage of dangerous goods; everything related to the cargo itself is decided by agreement between the forwarder and the cargo owner;

· There must be danger signs on the transport, and special markings on the cargo;

· Rules for the transportation of dangerous goods are regulated separately for each type of transport: rail, air, sea and road transport.

As you can see, the international transportation of dangerous goods is the highest degree of responsibility for all participants in the transport process. We strongly recommend that cargo owners carefully choose a contractor – a freight forwarding company with decent experience, professional employees, and reliable connections. A well-known problem for carriers from the CIS countries is the lack of specialized vehicles designed exclusively for dangerous cargo transportation. The economic problems and corruption that take place in the post-Soviet countries ultimately lead to the fact that the percentage of unsuitable (non-compliant) transport units that transport dangerous goods is critically high, in particular in Russia, where the main market for cargo transportation is actually concentrated for companies from CIS. Remember that entrusting the transportation of dangerous goods to a dubious contractor is fraught not only with the loss of cargo, but with much more serious consequences. With the help of the points listed above, it will be easier for you to navigate the market for offers for the transport of dangerous goods.

ADR cargo hazard classification, specifications:

CLASS 1 – explosive materials that, due to their properties, can explode, cause a fire with an explosive effect, as well as devices containing explosives and explosives designed to produce a pyrotechnic effect;

CLASS 2 – gases compressed, liquefied by cooling and dissolved under pressure;

CLASS 3 – flammable liquids, mixtures of liquids, as well as liquids containing solids in solution or suspension, which emit flammable vapors having a flash point in a closed cup of 61C and below;

CLASS 4 – flammable substances and materials (other than those classified as explosives), capable of easily igniting during transport from external sources of ignitionchanges due to friction, moisture absorption, spontaneous chemical transformations, as well as when heated;

CLASS 5 – oxidizing substances and organic peroxides which are capable of readily releasing oxygen, supporting combustion, and which, under appropriate conditions or in mixture with other substances, may cause self-ignition and explosion;

CLASS 6 – poisonous and infectious substances capable of causing death, poisoning or illness when ingested or in contact with skin and mucous membranes;

CLASS 7 – radioactive substances with a specific activity of more than 70 kBq/kg (2 nCi/g);

CLASS 8 – caustic and corrosive substances that cause damage to the skin, damage to the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract, corrosion of metals and damage to vehicles, structures or cargo, and can also cause fire when in contact with organic materials or certain chemicals;

CLASS 9 – substances with a relatively low danger during transportation, not assigned to any of the previous classes, but requiring the application of certain rules for their transportation and storage.
